One, for my readers in Iowa, comes courtesy of John Miller:
We’ve chattered a bit recently about the centenary of Robert A. Heinlein, which was last Saturday. Today is another important date in the world of Heinlein. The Puppet Masters is a 1951 novel about alien slugs that land in Iowa and take over the minds of Americans. It’s also a metaphor of anti-Communism, written during the days of Hiss-Chambers, the Rosenbergs, and McCarthy.
An excerpt from the first page: “For me it started much too early on July 12, ‘07…”
Today’s the day. Watch out for slugs.
The second is from BigT, who is always looking out for me:
Though Chertoff didn’t explicitly make it clear in his statement, I’m pretty sure the nation is now at Threat Level Chicago Dog with Everything.
I’m not going to really panic until it gets up to Portillo’s Combo Italian Sausage with Roast Beef levels.
